Baby mobiles and pedagogy: Are mobiles good for babies?

Mobiles are not considered classic tactile baby toys, but serve exclusively for visual stimulation. Strong light-dark contrasts and different shapes are particularly exciting for your baby from 0-6 months, as your baby's sense of sight still has to develop after birth. Bit by bit, babies use a baby mobile to better recognize the differences between clear light-dark contrasts, through intense primary colors (red, yellow, blue), to paler pastel shades. In addition to color vision, the mobile also improves spatial vision through the moving shapes. Furthermore, baby mobiles are even considered a sleep aid.



How do you use a baby mobile correctly?

The baby mobile should never be used as a play arch and should always be attached out of your baby's reach. You can also attach the baby mobile at a greater distance of one meter or more above the baby crib. It does not have to hang centrally over your baby, but can also be in the direct field of vision even when slightly offset. This has the advantage that you can attach the mobile towards the light source (window or ceiling light), and the light-dark contrasts will catch your baby's gaze especially well. In addition, your baby is protected at all times from falling objects, in case you should have fixed the mobile incorrectly.

 

How long is a baby allowed to lie under the mobile?

Make sure that your baby cannot reach the mobile with their hands and please remove the mobile as soon as your baby can sit up (approx. 6 months), as the thin strings can pose a risk of entanglement for your baby.
