How exactly do babies learn to grasp in their first year of life?

1. Innate reflexes (birth to approx. 2 months)

• Grasping reflex: Newborns have an innate reflex that causes their fingers to close when something touches their palm.

• This reflex is unconscious and serves as the foundation for later conscious grasping.

2. First conscious movements (approx. 2–4 months)

• Babies begin to move their hands consciously and observe them.

• They open and close their hands intentionally, even if the movements are still uncoordinated.

• They may try to touch objects that are close enough, even if they are often unsuccessful in grasping them yet.

3. Hand-eye coordination (approx. 4–6 months)
